Kosher Barcelona

Alon Kort, Nofesh Kasher · ✓ Checked

Barcelona has two kosher restaurants, a Chabad house with a minyan every morning and on Shabbat, and a kosher supermarket. Here I tell you what I did: where I ate, where I prayed, what I saw in three days — and where to stay.

The medieval synagogue in the Call (Carrer de Marlet 5) is a heritage site to visit — not a place of prayer. It is in the “What I visited” tab.

What I visited — three days

Day 1 La Boqueria, the Gothic Quarter and the Call

A walking day in the Old Town: market, lanes, the medieval synagogue and a park to finish. All on foot.

🕯 All day on foot. On Shabbat you can walk the route — without shopping at the market or paid entries.

La Boqueria market

Barcelona’s famous market, right on La Rambla. Come in the morning, when the stalls are full and the crowd thinner. For kosher travellers: cut fruit and fresh juice. At stalls 133–134 is El Falafel d’en Shani — vegan, gluten-free and kosher (mehadrin), open Monday–Friday 11:00–19:00.

🕘 Open Monday–Saturday 08:00–20:30, closed Sundays and holidays. Free entry (as of November 2026).

The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)

Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter
Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter · Photo: Nofesh Kasher

The old heart of the city, built over the Roman town: narrow lanes, small squares and the Gothic cathedral. Give it an hour, then walk on to the Call.

The Call and the medieval synagogue

El Call was Barcelona’s Jewish quarter in the Middle Ages, home of the Rashba and the sages of Catalonia. At Carrer de Marlet 5 is the room identified as the community’s main synagogue — small, below street level, restored and open to visitors.

🕘 Hours change between summer and winter — check before you go.

MUHBA El Call

A small branch of the city history museum on Placeta de Manuel Ribé, telling the story of the community up to 1391 and 1492. Half an hour; it completes the synagogue.

🕘 Open on some weekdays only; free at some hours — check the site.

Ciutadella Park and the Arc de Triomf

The big park of the centre — a good place for a picnic lunch with kosher food bought on the way. At its edge, the Arc de Triomf, built for the 1888 World Fair.

Port Vell

End the day on the waterfront by the old port and the Columbus monument at the foot of La Rambla. The aquarium is here if you still have energy.

Day 2 Montjuïc — the mountain of the Jews

A day on the hill above the city: views, the castle, museums and the Magic Fountain in the evening. Up by cable car or bus, down on foot.

🕯 This day needs transport and tickets — not for Shabbat. Plan it for a weekday.

One reading of the name is “mountain of the Jews”: the medieval Jewish cemetery of Barcelona was on this hill, and gravestones from it are shown in museums in the city. From the castle you see the whole city and port.

An evening show of water, light and music. It does not run every day and changes with the season — check the schedule before you plan the evening.

Day 3 Gaudí — Sagrada Família, Passeig de Gràcia and Park Güell

A Gaudí day. All three need a timed ticket — book ahead; in season they sell out weeks before.

🕯 This day needs transport and tickets — not for Shabbat. Plan it for a weekday.

The basilica Gaudí began in 1882, still unfinished. 2026 is the centenary of his death and it is especially busy — take the first slot of the morning.

🕘 Basic ticket about €26 (as of November 2026), timed entry.

Park Güell

Gaudí’s park on the hill in the north of the city: the mosaic bench, the dragon and the view. The monumental zone is paid and timed; the rest of the park is open. The way up from the metro climbs — comfortable shoes.

🕘 Adult ticket about €18 (as of November 2026).
